From December 1997 to February 2000, Dr. Cairo was a member of the faculty at Georgetown University where he was Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Pathology, Chief of Pediatric Hemotology, Oncology, Cellular and Gene Therapy, Director of Adult and Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Lombardi Cancer Center, and Medical Director of the NHLBI Cord Blood Collection Center at Georgetown University Medical Center. He relocated to Columbia University in New York City in March 2000, where he was Division Chief, Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation; Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Pathology at Columbia University; Director of the Phase I Pediatric Cancer Therapeutics Program and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Training Program; and Chief of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation.
In February 2011, Dr. Cairo relocated to New York Medical College where he is now Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Cell Biology and Anatomy. Dr. Cairo currently serves as Division Chief, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital; Director, Childhood and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Diseases Center; and Medical and Scientific Director, Stem and Cellular Therapy Engineering Laboratory.
Dr. Cairo has over 400 peer-reviewed publications and over 1100 national and international presentations. He is an international leader in childhood lymphomas and leukemias, stem cell transplantation, developmental therapeutics, experimental hematopoiesis and immunology and stem cell biology and regenerative therapy. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Experimental Hematology (ISEH), the Society for Hematology and Stem Cell Biology and Chair of the Immuno & Gene Therapy Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT).
