Regional Perinatal Center

Regional Perinatal Center

The Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) at Westchester Medical Center (WMC) is one of 18 Regional Perinatal Centers in New York State (NYS). We are committed to working with the NYS Department of Health and our affiliate hospitals to accomplish the goal of improving the health of pregnant women and newborns we serve in the Lower Hudson Valley Region. We partner with our 10 affiliate hospitals covering a seven county region and totaling more than 40,000 births annually.

Within New York State, hospitals providing maternity services are designated as one of 4 levels based on the ability to provide care for pregnant women and newborns.

  • Level I - Low risk mothers and newborns
  • Level II - Moderate risk mothers and newborns (Must have a "Special Care" Nursery)
  • Level III - High risk mothers and newborns (Must have subspecialty care/Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery "NICU"  )
  • Level IV - Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) - Highest risk mothers and newborns (Must have subspecialty care/NICU). Provides consultation and support, highest available technology for diagnosis and treatment of sick mothers and newborns, maternal & newborn transport, education, and quality of care in affiliated hospitals.

The role of the RPC includes oversight of the quality of care of mothers and newborns in our affiliate hospitals and in the region. We meet with our affiliate hospitals on a quarterly basis to review maternal/newborn transports, present individual case reviews, discuss quality improvement strategies, and provide educational presentations on related topics of interest and/or best practices or a chosen regional theme. Collection and assessment of RPC data and affiliate hospital statistical and regional data, and collaboration with public health agencies and community stakeholders relating to maternal/infant public health issues in our region is another vital role the RPC plays in improving quality outcomes of mothers and newborns in our region.

The WMC RPC team consists of an RPC coordinator, neonatologists, obstetricians, an outreach coordinator/educator and registered nurses.
